It’s a pretty universally held belief that goths are hilarious, but it’s the fat goth that I find the most amusing.
I think this is mostly because of the cognitive dissonance involved in dressing in black and acting pissed off at the world but still managing to find plenty of time to visit with Little Debbie. The apathetic and depressed don’t tend to eat themselves into a diabetic state, but the fat goth perseveres anyway. Here are ten great examples of what I’m talking about:

you know the common mistake people make with goths is they assume that they are poor. Most of the time they aren’t. The clothing is expensive. Some pants can cost up to $200! For a pair of flippin pants!

I drift in and out of the goth scene quite a bit myself and though I could definitely stand to lose a few pounds, I don’t know how anyone can do this to themselves. Absolutely disgusting.

… are you kidding me? “Comfort eating” is incredibly common. It’s actually most of the reason I’m overweight, personally (though I’m also glad I’m not NEARLY as big as these kids).

I’m not gothic nor diabetic and obese, but I think it’s cruel to subject people to this. They express themselves, as is their right, in the way they identify with. No reason to poke fun at them. Being obese isn’t funny, it’s dangerous…
I feel sorry for the people pictured here. Since this is a compilation of pictures already in circulation, they probably have already had someone show them that they are being ridiculed on the internet. Imagine the humiliation! How would you deal with being in their position?

Actually, the very top pic (”Lonely Goth”) isn’t “goth” at all. The corpsepaint shows he is rather a fan of what we call “Black Metal”. For anyone over 25, you may remember hearing about some church burnings in Norway about 20 years ago- that was a group of extremist black metal bands. Funny thing is, now the Norweigan BM scene is super-overblown now, much like the “Hot Topic Goth” scene here. Just enlightening.

What would be more cruel would be for no-one to say anything, leave them living like this without realising everyone thinks they look ridiculous and giving them the chance to do something about it. If any of these people lost some weight and stopped with the make-up you wouldn’t recognise them from these photos anyway.

None of these people are goth… If you want to see how real goths look, google for Siouxsie Sioux or Rozz Williams. Or just go to my Myspace page if you want to see a “normal”, not famous goth. Seriously, don´t talk about things you don´t know shit about. And to the poster who didn´t think goths could smile - uh, dude, what planet are you from?
You guys really should educate yourself. There´s a HUGE difference between the American trend of “mall goths”, which are not gothic at all, and true goths. As for fat goths, yeah, goths are people too, so there´ll always be some individuals with more weight than the norm. But more often than not, once they understand what they can and can´t wear, and adapt to it (comes with maturity and growing intelligence, usually), these people can actually look stunning. I´ve seen quite a few extremely beautiful fat goths in Victorian style clothes, usually complete with corsets and stuff. It was pretty. The problem is just that those who actually do have a sense of style are often overlooked, because they can´t be ridiculed by the general mob, and thus are not interesting targets. Get a grip. I could point out a number of “normal” fat people who look just as pitiful as these poor persons up there, but since I actually watch my manners and try to be polite I will let it be.
If I had to guess “lonely goth” is somewhere there was a con or something recently, because unless I’m confused, the girl in front of him looks to be cosplaying as Aeris. It also kind of looks like i can see a lolita in there as well. Maybe I’m wrong, but that would be my guess.

Have you guys heard of 4chan or trolling? Bad Poetry Goth is part of a troll, and is almost without a doubt not the author of the text next to the picture.
#7, #6, and #4 (and also possibly #5) are all clowns and not entirely really goth. The term is “juggalo,” essentially a term for “dark clown,” usually followers of ICP and Slipknot and Korn. Like emo does from punk, juggalo takes visually and stylisticly from goth, but are not one in the same.
On the obesity-issue — it’s like this — if you are well-informed about what to eat and not eat (and how much), can /afford/ to buy the foods you /should/ eat and can get a reasonable amount of exercise during the average day, you will be in good health.
So it’s usually a double-whammy economic factor: less money to buy good food, less education to know to seek it in the first place, and often less freetime to prepare it correctly.
Other times it’s just because people are too lazy to take care of their bodies, or misinformed about the effects of “dieting” asin simply reducing the amount of food consumed, rather than making deeper changes.
#1 and #2 should probably seek medical attention and are also notably not necessarily goths.
#10 and #8 are not definable as goths simply from the visuals here.
So that leaves us with #9 as our only conclusive fat goth picture.
But even after all that — pick a harder target next time. Choosing a group that is doubly stigmatized is easy (fat, goth). How about a column on just plain old obese people? I bet there’d be lawyers if this got enough hits, and… there’d definitely be BAAAWing.

i think their clothes are funnier than their weight. if you dress like that past age 15, you’re hilarious. but really, even overweight goths put a great deal of care into their appearance, and unlike most of the above, dress in the most flattering way for their body type. these kids are just experimenting with angst because they’re kids and it’s what they do. however, people who dress like that sort of accept that they’ll inevitably be ridiculed. they ignore it mostly because hey, they think you look just as stupid.

to anyone who says being fat isn’t that person’s fault. I can see where you are coming from if the person is slightly overweight, genetics do have something to do with fatness. However, at some point you become fat based on how much food you take in and how much food you work off. There is no excuse for being that fat other than pure laziness and eating too much.
Personally, I have had times where I was slightly overweight. However, I manage to eat less and run more, causing the weight to drop. Surprising that it actually works, eh?
I personally haven’t been to other countries, but I’ve heard in some non-U.S. countries, the fatter kids are made fun of for being fat, and as a result there aren’t fat kids, because no one wants to be made fun of. Do you think maybe the obesity problems in the U.S. stem from no one ever calling anyone else fat because it’s offensive (combined with our excessive use of mcdonalds of course) I think this is where a lot of problems come from, no one ever wants to tell anyone else that they can’t have something, which results in Obesity, excessive spending, spoiled kids, etc.
