Thanks for making me laugh in the morning, funny as. The Crystal Meth: Friend or Foe is classic :)

  2. signs on February 19th, 2008 8:00 am

    HA! These are great.

  3. K. on February 19th, 2008 8:45 am

Regarding the Hornets one. It could be math based, statistics. We always had a few math based experiments when I was in school.

  4. Chris on February 19th, 2008 9:00 am

I especially like “What’s my Dog’s favourite Color”

Doesn’t he know dogs only see in black and white? What a shitty science teacher he must have!

  5. Awol on February 19th, 2008 9:54 am

@Chris… you might want to go back to your science teacher and learn that dogs do see in color.

Thanks, hilarious. Some schools make science fairs optional, some make them optional but prod students into doing a science fair project, and some *require* kids to do one whether they want to or not. Which is terrible. And which results in terrible, uninspired science fair projects like these. If 1/10th of the elementary students in the U.S. did science fair projects each year, they’d be 10x as good each year.

  8. Randy on February 19th, 2008 10:30 am

Maybe dogs can see in color, but they can’t look up.

  9. KingKha on February 19th, 2008 10:35 am

I think that says “some say creation”, her head’s in the way. Also, dogs have the equivalent of red-green colourblindness, so they can’t distinguish between green and red objects

  10. n3verm0re on February 19th, 2008 10:41 am

That’s “some say creation,” not “me say creation.” Two letters are hidden by the girl.

  32. Andrew on February 19th, 2008 2:54 pm

Bobochimp… The “dogs can’t look up” thing is a reference to a joke in the movie Shawn of the Dead. Dogs can, in fact, look up. And often do.

  51. Elvis Julep on February 19th, 2008 4:18 pm

The last one is the funniest by far, because the imagination conceives the most absurd events that led to the “project”. I imagine the guy forgot about his science project until bedtime the night before, then frantically grabbed two house plants, a bottle of Mt. Dew, some stray pieces of printer paper and a Bic pen. He juiced up plant A with a healthy dose of soda and scrawled out about about 15 lines of “data”, along with what barely qualifies as a title. He stuck it all on a spare piece of poster board and voila! Instant F!

  52. Scott D on February 19th, 2008 4:21 pm

Just wondering where you got all of these pictures. I actually know a few of these kids from subbing in my local school district over the past 4 years.

Real science project from my high school science fair…

    “What is a rocket launcher?”

Hypothesis - It is a tube that shoots rockets

Conclusion - It isn’t just a tube, it has angles inside it that affect how it shoots.

That was all the guy had on his board…

Nataly: An ‘urgent need for the parents to be behind the children’? Why? Do you think they’re bad projects, or that they didn’t do the work themselves? ‘How to start a dot com’ could be a useful science project. As long as he went into the science and broke down the syntax and different components of and not just the formating and fonts used when creating a site, it’s legit.

Don’t blame the science teachers…they can only do so much with what mama sends them. It’s not like college or professional coaching…you can’t go out to recruit the best. Take it from someone who spent 32 years trying to teach science in a public school. It’s not as easy as you might think. It’s a battle with stupid parents and stupid administrators not just with the kids themselves.

  99. missbossy on February 20th, 2008 4:05 am

I suspect many of these projects are the science teacher’s fault.

In grade 6 I did my science project on volcanoes. Some weeks later I brought in my “UFO newspaper clippings scrapbook” for show and tell and the teacher asked me why I didn’t do my science fair project on UFOs “given that you have so much good evidence and research.”

At age 11, I thus had to explain that News of the World articles weren’t exactly evidence and that the UFO thing was just for fun.

I’m not really sure what is everybody is laughing (or crying) about. As someone who has taught 6th through 12th grades over the past seven years, I can assure you all that all of this is par for the course in public schools. I’m sure the science teacher (if indeed these are just from one school) was happy just to have students turn something in. I’ll let you in on a little secret: we teachers don’t really teach anything anymore; we just babysit. And don’t blame us either. With all the new legislation concerning Special Education, No Child Left Behind, and attendance law, there is very little we can do about anything. The thing that discourages me the most is that I didn’t see a single volcano in the entire site!

For what it’s worth, my interpretation of the intended humor on this site is the ironic naming of the projects–not so much the content of the experiments.

  104. Kitten on February 20th, 2008 7:21 am

    What’s My Dog’s Favorite Color?

Best ever experiment. It also has room for expansion in asking, “Can I condition my dog to pick a certain colour based on a voice activated command?”

  105. Jeff on February 20th, 2008 7:52 am

I hope some poor science teacher didn’t have to carry all this junk to the site to set it up. I’d love to see the data collected to support creation. Roses are red? That proves it!

I really don’t see how science teachers need to be pitied. I think these kids have done a great job! It’s inspiring and some of these kids look very proud and rightly so! Go team!

At least these kids are thinking about things and science. And that’s an improvement over 90% of the Adults in America, who basically do not think at all or ever. That may be why we ended up with president Bumble in the white house for the past 7 years.

for some reason, what’s got me laughing so hard I’m between crying and puking is this:

Bobochimp… The “dogs can’t look up” thing is a reference to a joke in the movie Shawn of the Dead. Dogs can, in fact, look up. And often do.

    And often do………. lmao

  162. dave on February 21st, 2008 7:44 am

how many of you have anything to do with science, other than being a middle/high school teacher?

  163. Nikita Nikolaev on February 21st, 2008 8:16 am

I guess the only good one I found was “what’s my dog’s favourite colour”, for the fact that dogs cannot distinguish colours is still quite a lot controversial. In fact, I have noticed a few times that my dog reacts to different colours; I haven’t specifically looked at its behaviour with respect to colours, nor have I ascertained that it was indeed because of the colours, hence that’s inconclusive.

Everything else is…. hum… for the lack of a better word… what are these children taught at school after all? I say this isn’t their fault (that their projects are absolutely meaningless), it’s the teacher’s fault. Really!

  170. D. Snider on February 21st, 2008 9:32 am

Does Bill Cosby know that kid has been raiding his sweater closet?? This is a particularly ugly subset of preteen/teenaged kids, but since science fairs tend to select (unless it’s compulsory) for kids who are, shall we say, more inwardly developed, it’s not a fair sampling.

My only regret is that I can’t see more of the “Moon Babies” poster, perhaps it’s autobiographical.

  172. wd on February 21st, 2008 10:10 am

While it is funny to us, China and India must be laughing themselves silly over it. Now I know why 60+ percent of Americans don’t ‘believe’ in evolution and why people think that a scientific theory is the same as ‘a notion’. Part of the problem is we don’t teach science in this country for the most part, we have someone in front of the classroom droning on about a laundry list of information (water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen, fire is rapid oxidation, the human cell contains 46 chromosomes, an object in motion will stay in motion., et al) kids spit back, and that is science. Kids aren’t taught that science begins, ends and begins again with a question, they aren’t taught to think things out for themselves or that science never claims that something is absolutely true, and more importantly, that scientific theory is not a guess, it is somethning that has achieved critical mass of consensus and has evidence and process to back that up, as well as people constantly looking at it and saying ‘what am I missing’.

These projects show none of that, they show kids who don’t have a clue what science is or how you go about it; instead of learning that, which is the valuable lesson, they learn a bunch of crap that can be spit back on some stupid test. No wonder that more then a majority of americans think creationism should be taught as science, they don’t even have a clue what science is, and I blame the science teachers as much as I do the students. Even at private schools, science before the high school level is a joke, and even much of that is ‘learning facts’ for tests such as the AP and not what science is.

And we wonder why high tech jobs are going overseas, the kids in these photos would struggle to work at WalMart.

  173. Geedavey, NY on February 21st, 2008 10:11 am

  174. fv on February 21st, 2008 10:12 am

Why are people saying mean things about the kids. it’s one thing to criticize the actual projects but by calling them ugly and saying things about their clothes, is that going to make the project any better? If they were “cuter “by your standards would their projects make more sense? Why don’t one of you that have mean things to say about the kids do a research project to see if the way someone looks or the clothes they wear have an effect on ones learning ability.

  216. A Dog on February 22nd, 2008 2:06 pm

I, incidently, am a dog. And I can tell you that we see in….bark! woof!!

Oh wait, dogs don’t have concepts of colors. How do we know what dogs see? Can’t we really only compare it to own own experience, when its likely to be radically different, so much so that we could only conceptualize aspects of it? Therefore, anyone who claims “to know what a dog sees” is equally wrong.

Compare this to why we don’t know how a dolphin or a bat ’sees’, and you’ll understand why we cannot conceptualize the total (visual or otherwise) experience of another being where ever it departs from our own. Seeing in infrared, for instance–as some of you have claimed dogs do (heh, dog doo)–how should we compare that to seeing in the “visible spectrum”?

  217. a former science fair judge on February 22nd, 2008 2:51 pm

Projects like these (although these are really bad) helped me decide NOT to judge state science fair this year. The shocking thing is that the HS teachers have NO idea about how to coach kids to do real science - ie test, evaluate, redesign test, reevaluate, etc etc. There are usually no critical thinking skills being developed. Its a shame really.

Sometimes my questions and prompting about “What does this result imply?” or “How should you redesign this experiment to measure what you are interested in?” would be the ONLY serious analysis the kids ever got.

Oh, and please, if you have kids doing science fair - don’t let them do the tired “Does steel wool rust?” Yes. It does. That is not a science project. Testing the bending strength of steel in various rusted states would be great, though!

“What makes you sweat more, anal sex, oral sex or missionary sex?’ The kid’s aunt was outraged that her precious nephew’s project was not on display until she found out the title of the project. This was a kid in 4th grade who went on the internet and found a ton of material he could print out and tack up on a poster board about sex. Where was his parental supervision.

This is great. Science needs to be accessible and serendipitous. Scientific thought really is the basis of understanding everything from the ridiculous to the sublime. Knowing how to laugh at themselves and the world around them may separate the next generation of scientists from the present crowd. The big fault with modern science is that it lets the problems be dicated by corporate, military or other institutional interests. Its great to see kids searching out problems and working them just for fun. Many are no more silly than those handed to us scientists by business.

Great science is born out of persistence and even apparently pointless curiousity — and bad science is a great example for everyone of how vapid planned organizational “science” can be. A win win.

    Hi.
I’m from the other side of the pond, and I am an actual scientist (in a discipline of so called ‘hard science’).

My reaction to the comments: HEY, don’t be so harsh !!!

Those kids looks funny ? But isn’t is what normal kids, eating sub-healthy food, with bodies flooded with hormones, looks likes on non-photoshopped pix ?

As for the science content of those posters, how can you judge ? We’ve got NOTHING but the FU*ING TITLES !
“Problem”, “Hypothesis”, “Procedure”, “Results” and “Conclusion”, the sub-sections suggest a real scientific approach. Is the content up to the standard ? We would need hi-res pix in order to judge it ourselves.

So, give the kids a break.
They are, indeed, the future of their nation (BTW, US or Canada ?), and every minute not spend in front of a teevee increases the chance of them not turning into ignorant racist gun-loving flag-waving bigots like 60% of their fellow citizen.
Bash them, blame them, laugh at their attempts to do science, and in 15 years North America will be China’s sweatshop.

PS.: in 5+ years, I would gladly give my number to the sweet “who’s your daddy” girl (^_^)

Always made me think of the saying, “There are those who make things happen and those who watch things happen, and those who barely wonder what.

  321. frank patrick on March 7th, 2008 7:14 am

Pity the science teachers? It’s the science teachers who have given up on teaching science that have led to these.

Most of these fat-asses need SOME kind of workout. Sure as hell isn’t sitting in front of a computer!

What’s wrong with either the parents….the teachers or the school for some of this garbage getting ANY recognition at all….come on! lol It’s a joke. I agree with some of the other comments….great big effin F.

Most of these kids don’t look like they could even tie their own shoes, let alone come up with a reasonable science topic.

    This is scary.

For me what makes it so tears-running-down-my-face funny isn’t necessarily that all the projects are “bad” or “stupid”, but just the innocence and realness of it all. Most people around that age (including myself when I was a kid) just naturally have horrible presentation skills. Horrible in a wonderful way. The memories of “typesetting” done by arranging sticky letters in an alternating lean to the left and right way.

I don’t know, I’m not articulating this well — basically, yes, I’m laughing at them, but in an empathic and sentimental way.

Also, it’s hard to gauge the quality of education based on a collection of pictures that were obviously hand-picked for humor value.

  332. Locke on March 7th, 2008 8:04 pm

Wow, if you plug “gay” or “Muslim” in the place of “creationists” in all these comments, suddenly it’s hate speech.

Think, people. Either we all respect each other–ALL of us–or we create a fascist state by our very words.

Somehow I think “someone’s mom” isn’t really anyone’s mom, if “she” thinks that someone’s beliefs are grounds for thinking they shouldn’t have kids. Last time that was enforced was…in a fascist state.

Bullying doesn’t even belong on playgrounds.

  342. Eric on March 11th, 2008 8:50 pm

The amazing thing about most of the comments here is that everyone is an expert on education because most of us have spent a good portion of our youth in them.
For for everyone who has not spent time in a classroom as a teacher you have no clue. So get off your high horse about teachers and public education.

Every classroom is going to have its share of screwballs and lumps on a log. This just clearly picks from the oddest and silliest experiments as well as the goofiest looking kids.

I had a good laugh until I read your ignorant and unthoughtful comments below the pictures. There are a myriad of ways to approach science and it isn’t all using rockets by coal miner’s sons ala “October Sky”.

  348. ricki on March 12th, 2008 7:59 pm

I’m a biologist, and I’ve judged middle school/high school science fairs.

What they’re doing here on the site is not really that different from what Jay Leno’s folks do for “man on the street” - intentionally edit to get the funniest/worst/most wrong response.

There are some bad projects - like someone said, some schools require it of all the students, so you get some really gung-ho kids who do a great project (which is not shown on this site) and then kids who just slap junk together at the last minute.

I suspect in a lot of cases, the projects aren’t so bad, it’s just that the titles are HORRIBLE. Kids are taught in school that you need to “grab” someone with the title, so the bad pun titles and the unintentional horrors like “Crystal Meth, Friend or Foe?” come up . Honestly, “real” scientists do not write journal article titles like that, why not teach kids to write real, serious titles on their projects? Titles that maybe give some clue as to what the experiment’s about?

And as for the ugly/obese comments: that’s precisely why I burned all my school pictures from 5th grade to 10th grade. Kids that age are just unfortunately in an awkward period and a lot of us were pretty ugly then. I’d hate for someone to get ahold of my 7th grade class photo; it looks NOTHING like I do now, thank goodness. (And besides: even if the kids are ugly in your opinion, it’s not like there’s a lot they can do about that. I don’t see any projects there on picking and choosing your genes so you look good…)

  349. Cujo on March 14th, 2008 4:59 am

I love the way you can see their personalities showing through. Some are smart-acecks, some are geeks, some are comedians, some are players, etc.

    Great post.

    Love that brilliant sweater.

  350. physics on March 14th, 2008 11:25 am

The photos brought a grin, and in some case the comments brought a grin. The golden aspect is the march 14 comment by cujo “you can see their personaliities showing through” and that is the what the science teacher sees. Perhaps better than the parent(s) can see.

  351. Kelly on March 17th, 2008 12:52 am

Every school year that I endured, required a science project. I usually did mine on psychology and seismology. I really felt bad for those who couldn’t come up with a sensible topic considering up to the ninth grade, we did not learn a single thing about science. Thank you California Teachers’ Union!

and ‘wasted’ has pre-post-talent in oodles.

  353. Tina on March 17th, 2008 3:56 pm

Actually, if you look carefully at the poster boards, you’ll see that many of the kids did multiple replications of their experiments, many did bacteriology (”Ewww, It’s all over us” and “Garlic the silent killer” for instance. The latter seems to be an experiment to show the antimicrobial properties of garlic) and at least showed some sense of scientific method. I can’t read what the creation poster concludes, so I’m not going to assume that she’s a creationist.
They are in elementary school. What kind of 3D graphics do you expect? They definitely need help with naming their projects, though.
And I desperately want to tell the Ideal Pancreas girl to “stop slouching!” Does this mean I’m turning into my mother?

  354. Elsa on March 17th, 2008 4:22 pm

    Elsa…

Ordinary people believe only in the possible. Extraordinary people visualize not what is possible or probable, but rather what is impossible. And by visualizing the impossible, they begin to see it as possible….

  355. K on March 18th, 2008 10:52 am

I’m not sure I understand science fairs, for how old are these? The themes are just awful… no title says, even remotely, what’s the research about.

  356. Jeff on March 18th, 2008 12:52 pm

I’m sure there were plenty of GOOD projects, but those aren’t funny, so they’re not posted…

but this does make me a little nervous about public schools, i already know that 3 or 4 selfish prick parents can ruin a classroom environment for all the other children, and teachers get paid chickenfeed… We need some education reform here in the states, to get these schools funded for goodness sakes!

I used to LOVE the science fair, but those dickhead kids who had their parents build them superconducters in 5th grade always ruined it. I think my kids will have really sarcastic underhanded science projects. :) …i’m thinking a project like “Do the students benefit when the superintendent at this elementary school is making over 3x the community average income? Hypothesis: No.”

    :)

  357. Alisha on March 19th, 2008 12:15 pm

  358. Sayne on March 20th, 2008 3:49 pm

I actually did a Plants + Pop experiment for my grade school science fair. The soda-fed plants did grow better than straight water-fed plants. It’s not the best poster, but it’s a valid experiment.

That kid is going to throw away the sweater in a few months. But I’d tell him to keep it. If he wears that aged 20 he’ll be hailed a genius. It’s such a shame that kids don’t realise true awesomeness until they’re past that age.

oh jesus…I am the science fair sponsor at my school, and I have SEEN these projects at fairs. They really do exist, people!

  366. Mary on March 28th, 2008 1:47 am

Having JUST gone through the science fair process, I can tell you there’s a good chance that titles like “Music & Sex” most likely refer to something like music and GENDER. But “music & gender” is NOT a catchy title and kids ARE told to try to come up with a catchy title. The title should NOT have to give away the entire experiment. Yet, not all kids have been told they can use sub titles.

I feel sorry for a few of these kids that have obviously done all the work themselves without even having someone helping them by buying them some markers or crayons. One project has each typed part held on by duct tape.

I adore the “Wii” project. That’s the kind of project the kid probably REALLY got into. The “Who’s Your Daddy” title is adorable.
At our PUBLIC school, I think the kid/s with “Nail that Wood” would have been encouraged to change the title. Our kids are REQUIRED to do projects and they have to have their ideas approved by the teacher. The teachers don’t allow anyone to do the same project. WHY? They could have completely different results.
At our regional fair it seemed most of what I saw revolved around music, video games or caffeines affect on something - plant growth, heart rate, etc. The other thing I saw a lot of was product comparison “best carpet cleaner” “What’s the best band-aid” etc.
BUT, if the kids really DID the projects, then, maybe they will get something out of it.

  367. Mary on March 28th, 2008 2:01 am

Sorry… when I said “they could have completely different results”…. I meant that I think kids SHOULD be allowed to do the same/similar project to someone else…. as the results of each project could show some interesting and differing results.

Although NO ONE wants to see a million kids with styrofoam planets. Maybe the teachers could limit the number of projects are the same. The schools and the Junior Academy of Science really limit what the kids can do and how much time they are given to work on projects. I say they should be assigned at the end of the school year even if they’re not dur till December. Sure MOST kids wouldn’t start them till the school year starts, but this would give them the opportunity to do so if they wanted

  368. zoe on March 28th, 2008 1:09 pm

  369. Mj on March 28th, 2008 6:12 pm

It was def fun to look at all the projects. I am glad that several ppl who posted do see that most of these kids worked hard and see the brilliance that some have. There are kids who are meant to be graphic artist, not scientists, some are meant to be comedians. There are many students who do amazing projects. This was meant to be funny so the funniest projects made it. **sigh**

Some of the people who posted are the ones who make me sad for our future. If you can’t see these light of these kids then what can you see?

My god, all you commenters are frickin’ retarded. You are all displaying less understanding of the scientific method than these youngsters, even the “creationist” girl. You formed a hypothesis, and accepted it as your conclusion. Way to go! For all you know (which is precisely zilch) the creationist project might have chosen a provocative title and been an experiment in genetics and a debunking of creationist ideas. Didja ever consider that, sparky?

Fairly normal fair. I remember in sixth grade a student did one “Does cheese make Mrs (math teacher) constipated?” We were forced to do science project every year starting in grade 4. If you were sneaky about and your teacher didn’t care you could get away with the same project 2 yrs in a row.

I especially love the snobish private school people. Don’t worry, your kids will turn out crappy no matter what school they go to. And then everyone obsessed with the hotness of the kids, the dogs, of course the sweater. To which I reply with eww!!, why???, and yes, the sweater is amazing!!!!

Hah! Those are some really funny pics and captions. :) Funny thing is, I don’t remember having to do Science Fair projects as a kid. Of course, it’s been a while since I was in school, but seems like kids can come up with some interesting and original ideas when left on their own.

  399. The Rev. on July 1st, 2008 5:26 pm

I judge at a regional Science Fair every year. These submissions are universal, in that I have seen all of these presented by kids with different faces. I would not trade this experience for ANYTHING. I love these kids and what they present (and some of it is done tongue-in-cheek only because it is a requirement in their school; so we laugh at them as they laugh at us.) I repeat, I love them and their projects.

He’s a bit of an idiot, so I doubt that any of HIS OWN actual work was put into it, (his mummy did it for him.) : )

  409. Sharon on August 23rd, 2008 9:08 am

That picture of the kid with Do Video Games Affect You? should be a public service poster!

  410. A high school teacher. on August 23rd, 2008 1:42 pm

Being a high school teacher myself, I found the lack of imagination in this section rather annoying. While some of these experiments are indeed hilarious, others seem to have been fit in just to fill up the list (10 hilarious experiments might have seemed to be less shocking than 41 to the creator of this series). I will not judge those whose point I cannot get due to low-res images - as for the obviously unfitting pictures in a list of “hilarious science fair experiments” (not listing a picture here does not in every mean that it shouldn’t be included into the unfit-list):

The Creation-one seems perfectly legit to me. The girl stated a point, had two different perspectives and tried to find evidence to prove one of these (you cannot see which one, admittedly).

For the Crystal Meth one: You people could know that Crystal Meth was not developed as a drug with side-effects regarding your outward appearance. It was actually designed and used to keep German WW2 soldiers awake in battle. It’s legit to contrast advantages and disadvantages.

Electro Worms might be about draining energy from worms. Don’t see a problem there.

Does Exercising Effect is certainly bad English. But as far as I see it, the boy followed a decent question. Of course I don’t really know about the outcome (as much as you do) … but he gave it a try and backed whatever he wanted to show with analyses. Whether his findings bring humanity forward or not does not matter in that case.

The Extreme Wood boy … what exactly is the problem with him? Can you see whatever he wanted to show with that? I can think up at least a dozen things about wood that don’t come to ones mind when just looking at a fireplace.

Fat Man To Mars seems to be based on the assumption that powering a missile enough to leave earths gravity in a good moment and a carefully calculated course to reach Mars at a certain point in the future is sufficient. That’s theoretically correct, though a bit more complicated in practice due to differing gravitational influence. Where’s your problem with this one unless whoever did it comes to the conclusion that he/she is capable of actually getting this rocket-thingy to Mars?

Something Smells Fishy seems to be based on the question “why do fish smell like fish”. Haven’t you asked that yourself at some point of your growing-up?

Foot Fetish - who knows if this really is about foot fetish or we just witnessed the first brilliant marketing campaign of a future ad-designer? Actually - imagine you were at this particular science fair: you cannot tell me you would not have gone there the moment you saw it.

Global Warming is about a problem with particular reference to questions bothering humanity. Whatever conclusions these two found is actually what science is about in the first place. If you want to judge it, go and have a look at their findings, not this picture.

Music and Sex - WHERE the hell is any problem with this one? Although I believe that “Music and Gender” would be a better fitting title from what I can read on the board, it’s more or less a question regarded in cultural studies worldwide on a daily base.

Garlic: The Silent Killer seems to be a really interesting one. Haven’t you always wondered whether garlic was really that healthy as your mother always told you - after learning that spinach was merely more than green, eatable non-food?

Do Video Games Affect You is definitely a legit question.

What’s My Dog’s Favorite Color - well … he definitely followed a scientific research method to find that out. And he seemed to have started with an analysis of the spectrum of colors the dog can actually see (mind you, no black and white here). I believe that whatever conclusion he found, he can back it up with research result. Just for following the method and actually doing RESEARCH - also considering that he’s a 6th grader - this one deserves an A.

The Wii-Workout - no problem there, I guess.

I seriously believe that this list would get much longer if I could have a closer look at the projects. Don’t be so harsh. They are kids - imagine if they found this on the internet, accidently (as some claim to have)?! Especially considering your extreme, unfit rudeness just to get a decent laugh.

    Better grow up.

Oh, and a PS for the obviously unavoidable “hot or not” folk: Who’s Your Daddy? seems to be part of a continuing process. Just from looking at the chart (or what I can decipher) I would doubt any scientific approach though.

  459. gingerbreadman on November 19th, 2008 3:12 pm

Instead of complaining, whining, laughing, why aren’t you all serving as a mentor to these kids or kids like them? Great pictures and at least these kids came up with something … that is far more important than the ones who gave up before they even started because people were making fun of their ideas. Great job for out of the box thinking! In light of the humor, kids are taught to come up with a catchy title that will draw attention to their project, something memorable, and these certainly are. Kudos to the kids, experiment on!

It’s late and I do seem to have gone all pedantic. But, since you can’t see the details of them, y’all are basing your opinions of these kids on the titles of their projects….many of which are Hi-larious and downright clever and/or provocative.

When you’re doing a science fair (especially older kids), you need to do something to make your project stand out. Or you are being required to do the project by your parents or teachers. Either of which is a good excuse for a clever (or obnoxious) project title.

BTW, a Fat Man is a type of model rocket.

  512. bob on January 14th, 2009 11:33 pm

global warming - yeah right??? Creationism?? in a science fair? that is like selling hotdogs at a veggie convention or chocolates to diabetics.

Plants and Pop. We all know he did that the night before. LOL OMG this is so crazy. I just wish we could see more details about some of the projects.

  538. blakelylaw on February 10th, 2009 8:04 am

This are too funny! My son is now working on his PhD in Microbiology, but we, too started this way. Let me see, there was the year of the bird seed experiment which destroyed the backyard because when the experiment was long done, the seeds - thistle, linseed, millet, etc. - still remained. At least we had lots of birds! But the most infamous one involved measuring oil viscosity at different temperatures. But, no, ordinary, store oil wouldn’t do - we had to use various oils straight from the field. It’s a miracle that the house didn’t burn down & we didn’t all asphyxiate!

  539. Lou Goldstein on February 10th, 2009 8:21 am

Your display of “41 Hilarious Science Fair Experiments” is a disgrace. Yes, many science fair exhibits are childish — they are produced by children. Although it’s not unreasonable to use childish work as a source of humor, the anonymity of the children should be maintained. When you identify the children by name or by picture, you invade their privacy, and the supposedly witty comments become a form of cyberbullying.

  540. la nena on February 10th, 2009 12:42 pm

Did anyone get photos of part 1?

  543. Lori B on February 10th, 2009 6:13 pm

Agreeing with Lou Goldstein - This posting of children is cruel. I can’t wait for all the commentators on this to grow up, have children, see their kids’ science project ideas on display. A new perspective you will gain.

As for dogs’ inability to look up… gee, have you ever taken your dogs outside… ever? Have your dogs ever treed a cat, squirrel, raccoon… anything? The dogs are looking up and at their conquests. I really wonder about people sometimes.

  544. eSkii on February 13th, 2009 11:26 pm

Jesus needs to come back and save the educational system and yes video games effect you.

  545. disgusted on February 18th, 2009 10:19 pm

WOW..you guys really ARE ridiculous (the people leaving the comments)..i mean..seriously..i come on here looking for a science fair project idea, and all I find is a bunch of adults making fun of these students who TRIED to do one..who cares if his sweater is ridiculous? what matters is his brain..who cares if his display isn’t very appealing? what matters is the CONTENT..and YES this is the “next generation”, and apparently, it looks like it’s WAY better than the current one..you have a 15 year old girl coming on here and telling you how ridiculous you all sound? “oh the guy on the left has kids, a wife and a tractor” -shakes head- YOU’RE retarded, not the kids..get a life people…GROW UP!

  546. MARINA STATE on February 19th, 2009 12:06 am

nice one about the dog i did it really great and true dogs don`t see in black an white only really dark so they see our collors

  548. Bernie Madoff on March 19th, 2009 8:43 pm

It’s cruel of you people to ridicule these kids and their science projects. I doubt many of you could equal their efforts. And I notice that most of the comments aren’t even about their projects, but more about their physical appearance.
    Disgusting.

I’ll see all of you in hell.

  549. Tiffany on March 19th, 2009 10:10 pm

As adults, I would expect us to be beyond the stage in life where we call others “nerdy” or as one poster suggested “hit every branch on the ugly tree”. As a parent, I am appalled that other “adults” would label children in this manner. These are hilarious, and that is probably what the children intended. They are trying to grab your attention. They are expressing their creativity. As for content, we can’t see that. The actual data might be surprisingly informative. It’s just a bunch of kids making science fun. As for the projects that are obviously lacking or questionable, they’re kids. We all did stupid things as a child. However, most of us grew up to be successful adults.

THAN THE stupid big bang theory. there is, first, no proof to back the big bang, and remains a scrawny, stupid theory. there IS evidence to back the creation, which is the Bible, so stop saying creationists are stupid idiots who talk to the sky, b@#$h

These are hilarious. For the parents bitching, get over it. If my kid was on here I’d still laugh my ass off. Creationalists, you’re retarded. The bible is not reliable material. Idiot bitching about the ‘dogs can’t look up’ comment; you’re retarded also. The guy was quoting a movie (Sean of the Dead- go watch it). This is humorous. Take the sticks out of your asses and lighten up. These kids don’t give a shit. And if they did, they should grow a thicker skin. Trust me. I’ve seen way worse done to children than have them giggled at anonymously.

“Man, a lot of the girls have horrible posture. The one in ‘The Ideal Pancreas’ looks like she’s got at least 50 lbs on her back, and maybe a rope pulling her shoulders forward.”

Try being a junior high chick for 5 seconds - the bra strap snapping, the being felt up by disgusting teachers - and you’d have crappy posture too. That age sucked!

  581. lolroflmao on July 15th, 2009 9:31 pm

Lol, the one on plants and pop looked SO FREAKING DARN HILARIOUS!!! I mean, look at the guy! He’s like staring at the camera like he doesn’t give a f*** about what the teacher will say lol. It looks like his experiment was done in a week….

  585. Neil Walsh on August 19th, 2009 3:29 pm

I don’t want to piss on everyones parade of having a laugh at the expense of these kids, but most in of the photos I didn’t see anything to be condescending about.

The only things you can really see in the photos are the titles of the posters and the kids presenting them. The titles are dumb, for sure, but they are probably done like that to make them catchy. The kids look pretty ridiculous themselves, but guess what-they’re nerds!

I’ll bet that pretty much any kid who volunteered to do a sciene project at high school wasn’t exactly the best presented or coolest looking. I’d have to read the actual content before making a decision….

On the left, he is clearly showing that dogs are red/green color blind with the visible wavelengths comparisons (dog is top).

Yet, he still has red AND green as choices.

That is the power of learning. I blame the internet.

I’m a science teacher at a small rural school & the state’s science fair is a JOKE.
Now that our regional fair’s in the tank, I wanted to quit science fair projects all together & go with Science Olympiad.
We’ll see if my school will let me. But in my professional opinion, science fair is only for that once in a blue moon kid who really wants to do one.
The rest of the kids would learn better by doing something else.
And hint: the big winners at Internationals are the Governor’s school projects.
In our rural setting, kids can rarely compete with that level of access.
Plus the rules & paperwork are a complete joke.

  720. Madeline on March 31st, 2010 8:56 pm

These project were just too cute! I remember all the years my kids had to do them. Too bad they didn’t think of “Garlic. The Silent Killer!” Hillarious!

So many of the comments are sad, though. Cheap snapshots don’t make anyone look their best. Of course these poor kids look rather ugly.

Kudos to the girl who had the courage to tackle the creation/evolution question. By the way, it is impossible to actually see the content of her project. The lighting and the distance of the camera render all the posted material on her board un readable. All you can see is “Some say creation.” Chances are she counters it with “We say not.” Yet the commentators on this site only want to trash her as stupid and unworthy of any good word. HEY! Even if she is questioning the status quo, science is all about questioning. That is how we learn. Sometimes when we examine the facts with a true open mind we find something we would never expect. And I say this in regard to BOTH sides of the question.
