The Longest Place Names In The World

Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg

Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg is a lake in the town of Webster, Massachusetts. Many call the lake by it’s alternate name … Lake Webster. I can’t really blame them for that.

The official name of the lake (as recognized by the US Interior Department) is a little shorter, but still a mouthful: LakeChaubunagungamaug. The name originated with a group of Algonquian Indians called Nipmucks.

Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg is the longest place name in the United States but only the sixth longest in the world.

The longest place name in the world is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotameteaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhen
uakitanatahu, a Maori word for a hill located in New Zealand:

The longest place name in Britain is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, a small town in Wales. The name was contrived specifically to be the longest town name in Britain:

I always thought the real name of Bangkok was the longest.

Krungthep Maha Nakorn, Amarn Rattanakosindra, Mahindrayudhya, Mahadilokpop Noparatana Rajdhani Mahasathan, Amorn Piman Avatarn Satit, Sakkatultiya Vishnukarn Prasit

The name of Webster lake roughly translates into:
“You fish on your side, I’ll fish on my side and nobody will fish in the middle”.

Tragically the original dialect of the language is now extinct.
